Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata is a hallucinogenic mushroom that contains high concentrations of psilocybin and psilocin. It also has lower doses of baeocystin. It’s a close relative of the P. subaeruginosa from Indonesia, P. septentrionalis from Japan, and P. wayanadensis from India.
It’s a relatively new species first documented in 2003 by Richard Gaines in Montgomery, Pennsylvania. Physically, it may be confused with the more popular Psilocybe caerulipes but its larger stature, early fruiting season, membranous ring on the stem, and rhomboid spores.

Wild Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata is a native of the eastern region of the United States. It can be found in a range that stretches from Kentucky to Rhode Island, but has also been seen as far south as Georgia. P. ovoideocystidiata seems to have an inclination to grow in the Ohio river valley where it grows on woody debris on areas where rivers and streams overflow.
Over the past few years, it has also turned up in the western United States particularly in the Pacific States from Washington to Southern California. However, it’s still uncommon in this region. P. ovoideocystidiata grows from April to mid-June but they can occasionally fruit as late as November.
Although unverified, reports have shown it has grown in Europe, specifically in Switzerland and southern Germany.
Indoor Cultivation of Psilocybe Ovoideocystidiata by Transfer

- ovoideocystidiata’s natural habitat is woody debris in sandy loam along streams and riverbanks. This method is an attempt to simulate a hard winter, followed by a spring thaw, which produces a flood, and buries the shrooms’ colonized wood in mud along a stream bank.
It started out by collecting wild mycelium and putting it in a plastic bag which is them placed inside a freezer. The next morning, it was frozen solid and was removed from the freezer. Don’t worry because if this can survive being frozen in the wild, it can most certainly survive inside a freezer.
A large bag was also filled with the muddy, sandy soil gathered from the riverbank where the P. ovoideocystidiata was collected.
Glad-ware dishes were used for the next step. To simulate a soil drainage similar to the wild, twenty holes were melted into the bottom of each glad-ware dish.
An inch of river sand/mud was placed in the bottom of each dish followed by an inch of frozen, colonized wood chips, branches, twigs, etc. The top of each glad-ware container was cased with another half inch of sandy mud.
We then gave it a thorough soaking with cold, tap water to wash the loose mud into the several empty spaces around he substrate. Next, we placed the dishes into a larger tub which was humidified by wet orchid moss. This method should work better than perlite because it covers more surface area.
It’s important to keep fanning and misting the tub and glad-ware containers at least several times a day. Within ten days, several pins of P. ovoideocystidiata should appear.
Experienced mycologists call the results of this process as “a very nice grow.”
This method has several advantages. Because it mimics the natural environment of P. ovoideocystidiata, the chance of success is much higher. And by using the riverbed soil where this magic mushrooms naturally grows, you skip several steps in creating a substrate – a step which many newbie mushroom growers find intimidating and difficult.
